Fibroid Treatment in South Africa
Due to the relatively new nature of fibroid treatment in South Africa, many gynaecologists are not familiar with this revolutionary option. Fibroid embolization is a minimally invasive fibroid treatment which can help treat heavy menstrual bleeding, pain, and pressure on the bladder or bowel. Unlike with some other fibroid treatment options, with fibroid embolization, the uterus is preserved making pregnancies possible.
The purpose of fibroid embolization is to block the blood flow to the fibroids, which ultimately leads to fibroid death and shrinkage with a minimal recovery time in comparison to surgical treatment.
Minimally Invasive Fibroid Treatment
Fibroid Care has introduced another option for fibroid treatment, therefore, the desire to maintain fertility should not prevent you from getting fibroid treatment because the minimally invasive fibroid treatment is now available and it is known as uterine fibroid embolization. The decision to perform uterine fibroid embolisation should be a collaborative one between the interventional radiologist, the gynecologist, and most importantly, the fibroid patient.
The content of this video is attributed to the work done by Dr. W. Walker, a leader in the field, from the Royal Surrey Hospital, England.
Following UFE, the patient is observed for 6 hours under the direct nursing supervision and placed on a patient-controlled analgesic pump which allows patients to give themselves intravenous (I.V.) pain medicine when they need it. This allows the patient to manage their own pain control. The majority of patients are discharged the day after the procedure. A six-week follow-up visit is usually scheduled with the referring doctor. To find out more about fibroid treatment in South Africa, Namibia and in Botswana. Request a consultation here.
How is Uterine Fibroid Embolization Performed?
Uterine fibroid embolization is performed with a small catheter (a 2 mm flexible tube) inserted into the artery at the top of the thigh near the groin. The procedure only needs local anesthetic that numbs the thigh area. Dr Lawson will then enter selectively into both uterine arteries under imaging guidance and inject small particles that will block the blood supply to the fibroids. The Uterine Artery Embolisation procedure results in limited blood supply to the fibroids, which prevents further growth and heavy bleeding. Following UFE, the patient is observed for 6 hours under direct nursing supervision and placed on a patient-controlled analgesic pump. A patient-controlled analgesic pump is a safe way for people in pain to give themselves intravenous (I.V.) pain medicine when they need it and it allows the patient to manage their own pain control. The majority of patients are discharged the day after the procedure. A six-week follow-up visit is usually scheduled with the referring doctor
What are the Risk Factors for Uterine Embolization?
Uterine embolization is a procedure that has been practiced for well over two decades. Studies have shown that a high percentage of women find long-term relief of fibroid symptoms after UFE. However, not all women are good candidates for this procedure, as there are certain risk factors.
A comprehensive understanding of the treatment options, risks, and expected outcomes is essential in making a decision about the management of your condition. Uterine artery embolization is a well-practiced procedure among interventional radiologists, associated with few complications.

What Patients Say
Karen
The result for me is I don’t feel tired anymore. I feel younger than I was then. I have far more energy and a flatter looking tummy. It’s been just over a year now. My fibroid is still there but it is a lot smaller and lighter
Doreen
Before UFE, during my cycle I would bleed for 10 days. But after UFE I only bled for 3-4 days and significantly less. All the other symptoms I experienced before had improved as soon as three months. I had so much energy afterward. I even started running—it was that drastic

I was thrilled to find an option other than major surgery to solve my problems with fibroids. Better yet was the fact that my recovery was days, not weeks. I missed only one day of work and was swimming even before returning to work. As time passes, I continue to be thankful for this procedure and for Dr Lawson being there throughout the embolization as well as for his continuing follow ups.

As a relatively healthy person, I wanted a procedure that offered less risk and would allow me to return to my normal life as soon as possible. Embolization gave me this choice. After having the procedure I had no complications and was back to my normal activities within 10 days and the best part was I was no longer experiencing all the unbearable symptoms that the fibroids had once caused.
Embolization changed my quality of life and I would definitely recommend it.”

I just want you all know that I’m a patient of Dr Lawson and had this procedure done about January of 2016. I cannot THANK him enough for putting me out of my lifelong misery. What a relief. I have never felt better in my life. And what an easy way to take care of fibroids. I recommend it to anyone. You won’t regret it.
